Wild Threads: The Nature of Quilts
On view November 13 – December 31, 2026

For more than 35 years, quilter Betsy Dorr has explored the expressive possibilities of fabric, color, and thread. A lifelong lover of sewing, Betsy illustrates landscapes, textural flora and fauna, and vibrant animal forms with colorful fabrics and threads.
Dorr’s relationship with sewing began in childhood, influenced by a family of makers that included her mother, both grandmothers, and three sisters. After two careers, she followed her passion by opening Quiltessentials in Auburn, where she spent 27 years surrounded by beautiful fabrics and the creativity of fellow quilters. Teaching machine quilting and sharing her expertise with students throughout Maine have remained important parts of her practice.
Nature is a constant source of inspiration. Time spent hiking and wandering through the woods informs Dorr’s attention to the textures, colors, and patterns of the landscape, from the intricate forms of mushrooms to the changing character of trees. Working with cotton fabrics, including hand-painted textiles, she builds compositions through thoughtful combinations of color, pattern, and material.
Betsy utilizes machine quilting to create her intricate line details. Using free-motion stitching on a domestic sewing machine, Dorr approaches thread as a drawing tool, adding lines and textures that reinforce a composition or bring particular details into focus.
After decades of running a quilt shop and creating work for others, Dorr found new freedom in retirement to follow her own ideas and explore the subjects that inspire her most. Her quilts reflect both the technical mastery developed over a lifetime and the pleasure of making something entirely her own.
Dorr was featured in Better Homes and Gardens in 2015, recognizing Quiltessentials among the top ten quilt shops in the United States. Dorr continues to share her work through exhibitions, teaching from her home studio in Auburn, Maine, and displaying her work at the Center for Maine Craft.
In Wild Threads: The Nature of Quilts, Dorr invites viewers to look beyond the familiar function of a quilt and discover its potential as an art object, where fabric becomes landscape, thread becomes line, and the natural world finds new expression through the art of stitching.
