Blue Karnofsky Butterfield grew up in Bar Harbor and began her pursuit of the arts hiking up Flying Mountain with Christina Heineger sketching the fiord of Mount Desert Island. She won an Educational Foundation Art Scholarship to study abroad her junior year in high school and thus found herself painting German wine valleys and ancient castles.

She serendipitously crossed paths with Tom Killion, a visiting professor, while attending Bowdoin College. As an accomplished woodblock artist and history professor, he introduced her to woodcuts in all forms and the amazing woodcut tool suppliers McClain’s.

When she is not carving wood, she practices hospital medicine as a physician assistant at Maine Medical Center. Her other devotions include mountain biking, absurd athletic competitions, vegan cooking, and making woodblock t-shirts for her family and favorite fantasy authors.

She lives with her adorable husband Kevin and their two crazy boys in Portland, Maine.
