Shop Maine Craft presents:
BUILDING BLOCKS
An exhibition of fine furniture made by Richard Chalmers at the Center for Maine Craft in West Gardiner.
On view NOVEMBER 4 – DECEMBER 31, 2024
In this exhibition, Richard Chalmers explores his passion for repurposing wood. From upcycled butcher blocks to plywood, he transforms these materials (oftentimes donated) into simple yet captivating creations.
“A spiritual teacher once told me that meditation is both foundational and aspirational. I find this sentiment rings true not only in meditation but also in the act of creating and building. This idea is echoed in the many books titled “Zen and the Art of _____.” As humans, we are builders, makers, and doers; it’s in our DNA. The act of making—whether it’s cupcakes, spreadsheets, furniture, skyscrapers, or computer code—is a creative expression that embodies our highest aspirations while grounding us in our fundamental nature. This is why I create; it’s essential to my humanity and allows me to reach for something greater.
I work with wood partly because I excelled in shop class in middle school, especially in mechanical drawing, and I’ve been interested in making things ever since. Wood connects me to nature; I enjoy its feel and smell, and its structural strength appeals to me. The surface graphics of wood can be calming to observe, reminiscent of watching the ripples and waves on water. It’s relatively easy to work with and offers endless artistic and technical possibilities.
My interest in blocks began while teaching woodshop to children, where I discovered the potential in this technique. My methods are intentionally simple, allowing me to focus on artistry and process without getting bogged down in complex techniques. Working with these blocks gives me a direct and straightforward connection to my artistry.”
