Mayumi Knudsen is from a family of professional classical musicians, all of whom played with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Surrounded by an abundance of classical music, her childhood was also filled with family members building and creating – from auto mechanics, carpentry, and model building to dressmaking, drawing, and painting. The creative process was always at the forefront of her family life and was where Mayumi’s passion to understand how things are made began.
Mayumi received her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and is a watercolor and gouache artist. She spent most of her career as a designer, stylist, and art director to the home furnishing textiles and wallcoverings industries where she commissioned designs and collaborated with design studios worldwide. Additionally, she designed a wide range of surface printed products that included stationery, greeting cards, and custom printed textiles.
Maine Craft Portland fosters Mayumi’s interest in connecting with Maine’s remarkable makers and learning about their creative processes. This vibrant and welcoming creative community allows her to immerse herself within the craft industries.
