Amber Ruston spends much of her time in Portland’s Arts District, working both toward her Metalsmithing and Jewelry BFA at Maine College of Art & Design and part-time across the street at Maine Craft Portland. Before coming to Maine, Amber grew up in rural New Hampshire, surrounded by woods and not many people. Moving to Portland has allowed her to find an incredible community of artists and help push her to learn new practices and expand on old ones.
Within her metalsmithing practice, Amber is focusing on creating a senior thesis based on curiosity and exploration through kinetic jewelry pieces. She works with brass most often, using powder coating to bring color into the work and fiber elements to bring comfort and approachability. She also likes to explore art making beyond metalsmithing, such as photography, graphic design, textiles and fashion design, and more.
