Turned Chess Set | Quilted Board | Peter & Sandra Asselyn

Hand Turned Chess Set
Peter & Sandra Asselyn
Historic Maple & Apple Wood Hand-Turned Pieces
With Hand-Crafted Cotton Quilted Board

This is very likely a one-of-a-kind chess set.  The light color wood is a historic Maple from Sabbathday Lake Shakers that was planted by Brother Delmer Wilson in the late 1800s.  The dark wood is Apple also from the Shaker property but only planted about 30 years ago.  The apple is darker than usual because I ebonized it.  This is a process using steel wool soaked in vinegar that reacts with the tannin in the wood to naturally turn it black.

The playing field for the game is a beautiful quilt made by my wife Sandra from some stash pieces she had left over from other projects called batiks.

The most unusual feature of the set, however, is that I chose to make the Queen taller than the King.  The Queen is the most powerful piece on the board with the ability to move as though she were any other piece.  She protects the King.

The game is over when the King is captured or unable to move.  However, it is the Queen who largely protects him.  The Queen is the King’s sword, so I thought it was about time she was recognized as the most powerful piece on the board.
