Lisa Evans has been working with ceramics for over 15 years. Her current work, made in her studio on the coast of Maine, is sculptural porcelain forms laced with iron inclusions and cobalt to create a molten visual effect.
“When I sit down at my potter’s wheel I try to abandon any notions of the perfect pot. I instead pursue an exploration in which the only guiding principle is ‘what if?’ A dynamic call and response conversation between the clay and me develops; an exploration of balance and structural integrity in which both sides seek equilibrium.
This game of sorts continues beyond the wheel with the addition of found elements such as iron and bits of stone, reactive surface treatments, and extreme firing conditions pushing the process even further. Many of my pieces don’t survive this process but those that do exhibit an ephemeral beauty only the fire can elicit and I cherish.
This quest for stability and sincerity is a reflection of my own inner call and response to love, loss, changes in family structure, career, culture and climate. It’s a process of choosing what to accept and what to fight for in my own life.”
