Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village Sugar Maple Bowl | Extra Large | Peter Asselyn

The wind storm of October 2018 blew over several beautiful Maple trees that stood proudly on the Sabbathday Lake Shaker property of New Gloucester, Maine. Planted in 1897 by br. Delmer, these trees produced many a gallon of syrup for generations of Mainers, and the finished bowls show tap holes and staining from this long history of use.

Woodworker Peter Asselyn has been making bowls for the Shakers for 20 years. When these trees were felled he and the Shaker village decided to make bowls from the wood and sell them at the Shaker store. Unfortunately, they will not be open this summer due to COVID19 closures, and these bowls have instead come to us. Over the summer of 2020 the Center for Maine Craft and Maine Craft Portland will be home to a very special collection of these wood turned bowls made from beautiful trees planted over a century ago on the Sabbathday Lake Shaker property. The logs were delivered to Peter 3 years ago, as you can see it took a lot of work to make bowls from these huge trees! Peter Asselyn feels a great honor in working with this wood, while keeping the Shaker spirit alive through these fine objects.

These bowls are found at both the Center for Maine Craft in West Gardiner and Maine Craft Portland. Please note that the item pictured is a sample of the wood grain and finish of the bowls, it may not be the exact bowl you receive in your order. Approximate dimensions: 14″ diameter x 6″ tall.
