The Queen Medallion
Christine Peters
18k & Sterling Silver

I create jewelry as small-scale sculptures, working with gold, silver, precious and semi-precious stones to make all one-of-a-kind designs. Most of these are inspired by natural forms–the force behind my strong yet classic designs. I create elements that are abstracted and simplified. Using repeating shapes and textures within a series, I often play with different finishes and components for unique looks.

For these pieces, I used literal chess symbols as my inspiration to create designs with an ancient appeal. The oxidized silver and 18k yellow gold dust meld together to form ghostlike silhouettes. Although these pieces are contemporary, all were made to look as though they came from a time when chess was played 1500 years ago.

This piece is currently at Maine Craft Portland as part of The Craft Maker’s Gambit Exhibition.
