Plush Queen
Hand Sewn 100% Cotton
Stuffed Red Velvet Figure

Erica Schlueter

When I heard about the show, the idea for making this Plush Queen just popped into my head. I think I just like the sound of it, “Plush Queen.” My sewing skills are a tad rusty, but I’m happy with how it turned out. For the fabric, red was the most suitable color available at my locally owned fabric store. The “Plush Queen” can be best described by her true definitions:”

plush n. A fabric silk, rayon, cotton, or other material, having a thick, deep pile. —adj. 1. Made of or covered with plush 2. Informal. Luxurious. (From the American Heritage Dictionary Second College Edition)

queen n. 5. Chess. The most powerful piece. (From the Random House Dictionary)

This piece is currently at Maine Craft Portland as part of The Craft Maker’s Gambit Exhibition.

Bent Metal is handcrafted jewelry created and carefully executed by Erica Schlueter. Combining silk embroidery and crochet with precious metals, Erica Schlueter pays homage to fine needle work that has been created all over the world and throughout history. Although Schlueter has been producing jewelry for over 10 years, her college experience spanned the study of various aspects of textiles and fibers. Over the years she has been exploring ways to combine fiber and textile techniques into her sterling silver and 18K gold and silver bi-metal jewelry pieces. While continuing to use rivets (and no solder) and embossing fabric textures into the metal, which have been influential design elements in her work, she further embellishes the textured metals with fine silk using embroidery and crochet techniques.
