Handcarved Shorebird | Kathy Webster

$60.00

Artist Kathy Webster is known for her beautiful, whimsical wood carvings of North American birds and other animals. This shorebird figurine was carved in a mid-century modern style with hand painted accents of brown and tan. Two metal bars act as the bird’s legs and allow it to stand on it’s own. There is also a silver hook attached to the bird’s back- loop a ribbon through to make it an ornament!

After completing her career as a registered nurse, Kathy turned to her home studio to immerse herself in the design and creation of original wood carved creatures. She also shares her techniques of woodcarving in local group classes and travels nationwide to teach her skills at craft events and workshops. Kathy was raised to appreciate the outdoors, where the woods and waters became her childhood playground. An avid bird watcher and frequenter of vintage decoy auctions, she likes to put her own spin on the Maine classics, such fowl hunting decoys, and other small creatures you’d expect to find in local folklore. She often incorporates antique farm tools into her work and tends to prefer carving into recycled wood gathered as scrap from local wood shops and yard sales. Unique and original, Her pieces are created in response to the wood as she sees what needs to be uncovered. Sometimes she finishes the work in waxes and oils to preserve the beauty of the natural wood grain, others are expertly painted to surreal anatomical accuracy, and some are a mixture of the two that look as if they’ve stepped out of a fairy tale. Regardless of which piece you choose, Kathy’s work will surely bring joy to anyone who comes across it.
