Chess Table
S.E. Hall

Driven by a passion for the craft, S.E. Hall Furniture and Design specializes in designing and creating custom furniture in partnership with clients.

My creative design aesthetic combines with my keen eye for detail to create unique and sophisticated pieces, Housed in a historic one room schoolhouse in Wells, Maine, the woodshop holds a combination of traditional hand tools and modern machinery, all used to create precise and elegant pieces.

Early inspiration for my craft and an understanding of the benefits of working with your hands stemmed from my grandfather.  A welder by trade and a significant role model for me as a child, he was also the first to teach me the game of chess.  These roots helped guide me to a collaboration with my friend, ceramic artist Rebecca May Verrill, bringing our two creative sty;es together to make a unique chess set with elegance and whimsy.

S.E Hall Furniture & Design
Wells, ME

Steve Hall’s deep connection to nature and interest in working with his hands began in early childhood, ultimately leading him to explore woodworking, a vocation he has now pursued for over 16 years. Beginning in a small cabinet shop in Portland, Steve found that hands-on creative work, problem-solving, and analytical skills required of woodworking were a natural fit for him. He continued his studies at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship, where he gathered an appreciation for the usage of hand tools, an element which continues to inform how he designs and builds today. His education, combined with a variety of experience working in different shops, provided the knowledge and skills to move forward in building S.E. Hall Furniture & Design.
Now located in an 1857 Schoolhouse just off Route 1 in Wells, Maine, Steve’s 1800 sq. ft. shop is divided between the working wood shop and a retail space. From the showroom space 8′ tall glass French doors provide an ample view into the workshop, giving visitors and clients an immediate sense of Steve’s personal creative process. He works closely with clients to meet their design needs, continuously learning as each project informs his growth as a maker.
