Liberty Graphics
Liberty, Maine

Designing and printing since the 1970s, Liberty Graphics was established when a locally based community of artists and artisans were looking for a means of support that would not disturb the natural beauty of the rural setting in Liberty, Maine. Founder Tom Opper and his partner, artist Beverly Kocenko, created the company in a tiny trailer on his property and began producing small batches of t-shirts silk-screened by hand. Throughout the 1980s, they sold shirts at local craft fairs, festivals, and other events. By the 90s, Liberty Graphics was selling to larger wholesale customers such as The Nature Company, The American Museum of Natural History, Monterey Bay Aquarium, L.L. Bean, and many others.

Over the years, appreciation for the art and the process grew in the community and beyond—as well as demand for the high-quality screen prints. With design emphasis on the wonders of the natural world and production methods that meet rigid ecological standards, Liberty Graphics’ concern for the environment has always been reflected in everything they do. Years of experience with water-based ink and hand-separated artwork allow their printing to be accurately detailed and brilliantly colored.

Liberty Graphics, Incorporated, is now owned and managed entirely by a cooperative made up of its workers. Their intent is to provide the same level of quality, service, and ethical manufacturing that the Founder demanded for over forty years.
