We are offering this Saturday sales position for those looking for a fun part-time job working with some of Maine’s greatest craft talent. About Maine Craft Portland
Maine Craft Portland is a retail gallery + resource center in the historic Mechanics Hall of downtown Portland, Maine. One of two galleries operated by Shop Maine Craft, the gallery sells handmade craft objects by members of the Maine Crafts Association. Maine Craft Portland promotes craft in Maine through exhibitions and public programming and directly benefits Maine craft artists through sales of their work. Maine Craft Portland opened in July 2018 and exhibits and sells the work of over 190 Maine craft artists and small businesses.
Maine Craft Portland employs part time hourly Gallery Consultants both seasonally and year round. Gallery Consultants are the front of house support of gallery sales & patron relationship building. Job success will rely on strong customer service, encompassing an ability to speak about our artists and craft objects, creating connections with visitors to provide a positive shopping experience, and ability to work collaboratively with a retail sales team.
Hours and Pay
Part-time Gallery Consultants are needed for 5-25 hours/week May through December. Hours may be reduced Oct-Nov and Jan-May. Must be available to work Saturdays. Store Hours: 10am – 5pm summer + holidays, 10am – 5pm in the off-season. Pay is $15/hour. Optional vision and dental insurance plans are available to part time employees. Plans are paid 75% by Shop Maine Craft and are available with no waiting period. All Maine Craft Portland employees also receive a free professional membership with the Maine Crafts Association.
Gallery Consultants are strong advocates of our two organizations: Shop Maine Craft and Maine Crafts Association. They actively promote the visibility, stature, and significance of the organizations within the community, and they work with their teammates to cultivate a positive working, shopping and learning environment. Gallery Consultants are responsible for making and processing sales, relationship building, handling fine craft objects, managing inventory and maintaining display and store appearance. They are responsible for communicating information about the Maine Craft Portland’s artist-members, craft objects, mission and programs to the various constituencies who visit the Maine Craft Portland each day.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Gallery Sales & Customer Service
- Inventory Management: Deliveries, Restocking, Storage, Returns, Counting
- Daily Housekeeping / Care of Retail Displays & Inventory
- Opening and Closing Procedures
- Webshop Order Processing
- Maine Crafts Association membership: Information + Processing
A strong candidate will meet the following criteria:
- Ability to cover weekend shifts
- Strong communication skills
- Knowledge of Point of Sale Systems, Microsoft Office, Google Drive. WordPress and WooCommerce a plus!
- Knowledge (or a strong supporter) of Maine craft artists and their practices
