The Center for Maine Craft is seeking new additions to their sales team. Our gallery employs creative professionals who support the income of our artist-members through gallery sales, and also offer travel information to visitors of the West Gardiner Service Plaza. Candidates must be available to work Saturdays and Sundays, 10am-6pm.

About the Center

The Center for Maine Craft is a retail gallery presenting and promoting over 300 artist-members of the Maine Crafts Association. Operated by Shop Maine Craft, the Center acts to increase public awareness of the significant role craft artists play in Maine’s culture, economy and heritage. Since its opening in November 2008, the retail gallery has supported Maine artists and organizations through retail sales, exhibitions, and events in a unique high-traffic location within the West Gardiner Service Plaza. In partnership with the Maine Office of Tourism, the Center for Maine Craft also provides travelers with statewide visitor information, maps, routes and other travel inquiries.

Position Overview

Gallery sales associates & travel consultants are the front of house support of Center sales and travel efforts. Job success will rely on strong customer service, encompassing an ability to speak about our artists and craft objects, creating connections with visitors to provide a positive shopping experience, working collaboratively with a retail sales team, and a general understanding of Maine tourism and local economy. Our part-time staff work both seasonally and year-round.

Hours, Wages & Benefits 

Pay: $15/hour starting wage
Part-time Gallery sales associate & travel consultants are needed 15-35 hours per week in our busy season. All staff must be available nights, weekends and some holidays. Store Hours: 9am – 6pm.

Job Description

Gallery Associates & Travel Consultants are strong advocates of Shop Maine Craft and Maine Crafts Association. They actively promote the visibility, stature, and significance of these organizations within the community, and they work with their teammates to cultivate a positive working, shopping and learning environment. They are responsible for making and processing sales, handling fine craft objects, managing inventory and maintaining display and store appearance. They communicate information about the Center’s artists, craft objects, mission and programs to the various constituencies who visit the Center each day. 

Travel Consultation: Center employees are also responsible for daily maintenance and attendance of the West Gardiner tourism information desk. Basic information desk operations entail providing personalized, over-the-counter tourist information services to walk-in-visitors seeking travel assistance and tourism-oriented literature about the state of Maine. 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Retail Sales & Customer Service

  • Inventory Management: Deliveries, Restocking, Storage, Returns, Counting
  • Daily Housekeeping / Care of Retail Displays & Inventory
  • Opening and Closing Procedures
  • Webshop Order Processing
  • Maine Crafts Association membership: Information + Processing

A strong candidate will meet the following criteria:

  • Ability to cover weekend shifts
  • Strong communication skills
  • Knowledge of Point of Sale Systems, Microsoft Office, Google Drive. WordPress and WooCommerce a plus!
  • Knowledge (or a strong supporter) of Maine craft artists and their practices
